What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathic treatment is a system of diagnosis and treatment for predominantly musculoskeletal conditions.

Osteopaths complete at least a 4 year degree including over 1000 hours of clinical experience. All Osteopaths must be registered with the General Osteopathic Council. The British Medical Association’s guidance states that GP’s can safely refer patients to an Osteopath.

Osteopathic treatment has shown to be helpful for a variety of musculoskeletal conditions, Including:

  • Back Pain

  • Neck and shoulder pain / stiffness

  • Headaches arising from the neck

  • Muscle and joint pain

  • Sports injuries.

Here at Eaton ford Osteopathy you can seek advice and treatment to alleviate pain and improve your physical and mental wellbeing. But, more than that, we want to give you the tools to keep your body working to its full potential by providing a good understanding of how your body works and promoting activities and habits for you to lead a healthier lifestyle.

What to expect

The initial consultation will last around an hour, during this time the osteopath will go through a full case history, asking questions to understand why you have come for treatment and to gain an understanding of your overall health. This will be followed by an examination, most likely in the area causing pain or discomfort.

After the examination your Osteopath will then discuss with you what they think is going on and explain how they might be able to help and how quickly they expect you to recover.  Treatment usually consists of massage and stretching techniques. Manipulation may also be used where by you hear a 'click' or 'pop' from your joints, this technique is used on a risk assessed basis, your Osteopath will explain the risks to you so that you can make an informed decision.

Your osteopath will always discuss what techniques they intend to use to ensure you are comfortable during treatment. With that said some patients can report feeling slightly sore after treatment.

Follow up appointments involve a catch up about how you responded to treatment and the current status of your symptoms. Most of the consultation is then focused on treatment. However if you do have new symptoms this may be further assessed.

Osteopathic treatment times may vary depending on the practitioner and the specific requirements of the patient. Which will be discussed with your Osteopath.
